For those looking to restore or add volume to their lips in a non-surgical and minimally invasive way, dermal fillers are often the way to go. While the results are only temporary, lasting an average of 12 – 18 months, they provide an immediately noticeable result that often helps recipients to feel more comfortable and confident as they move through their day-to-day life.

Your specialist will give you a list of things to do and avoid before your scheduled lip filler appointment. For the best results, it’s important to ask any questions that you may have and ensure you’re following instructions as prescribed. To prepare for your first appointment, you’ll likely be asked to adhere to the following:
7 days before your appointment:
● Avoid green tea, ginkgo biloba, garlic, ginseng, ginger, St John’s wort.
● Avoid taking anti-inflammatory medicine such as Aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Aleve, Ibuprofen
● Avoid taking supplements, such as Vitamin E and Omega 3’s.
● If you require pain medication, choose Tylenol (if safe and applicable)
● Limit your alcohol intake.
2 days before your appointment:
● Discontinue using skincare products containing exfoliants such as tretinoin, retinol, retinoid, and glycolic acid.
● Do not shave, wax, or pluck around the lips.
● Do not use depilatory cream on or around the lips.
The day of your treatment:
● Gently wash and clean your face.
● Do not wear any make-up.
● Ensure to eat something and stay hydrated before your procedure.
Your performing physician may ask for you to take additional steps before your treatment. Always speak to them about any questions that you may have regarding pre- and aftercare.
The rate at which your dermal filler will dissolve is dependent on your age, metabolism, the mobility of the treated area, and how well you adhere to aftercare instructions following your procedure.
Those with faster metabolisms will typically experience shorter results because their bodies will break down the filler faster than those with slower metabolisms. In addition, the more mobile the treated area, the faster the filler will dissolve. As the lips are one of the most active areas on the face, used for talking, eating, kissing, breathing, and facial expressions, filler tends to dissolve faster in this area.
Lip fillers are a relatively non-invasive option for those looking to plump up their lips without undergoing painful and costly surgery. They require little-to-no recovery time and the results are immediately viewable, making them one of the most popular cosmetic procedures on the market.
The most common side-effect of lip fillers is light to moderate swelling around the injection site. This is completely normal and should resolve itself within a couple of days. To help alleviate any discomfort during this time, you can apply ice to the swollen area immediately any time after your appointment, and in the days following.
During the first 48 hours following your appointment, it’s recommended that you avoid strenuous activity to allow the injection site the best opportunity to heal. Spikes in blood pressure and heart rate after getting a lip filler can increase swelling and bruising around the treated area, so it’s best to take it easy following your appointment. Gentle movement is fine but try and avoid the activities that will get your heart pumping.
Doctors also recommend that you drink plenty of water to keep hydrated and avoid flying and pressurized environments for at least a week following your procedure.
There are no terrible consequences to discontinuing lip filler. Your body will naturally metabolize the filler over time, and then your lips will gradually return to their previous size and shape. No sagging, no stretching, just your natural lips.
